The Big Lebowski (1993)

For decades the Coen brothers have delivered quirky characters and idiosyncratic movies — none more so than Jeff Bridges’ Dude in “The Big Lebowski”.

The story of “The Dude” was not wildly successful in its initial release, but it has since grown into a place on everyone’s short list of cult classics. The film is now in the National Film Registry and has spawned a cottage industry and “pseudo-religion” of its own.

For this movie, the brothers assembled a huge cast and diverse cast — Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, Philip Seymour Hoffman, John Turturro, Sam Elliott, Ben Gazzara, and Asia Carrera (yes, THAT Asia Carrera– the Rutgers alumnus, Mensa member and former porn star).

Julianne Moore and dancers appear in this “bowling fantasy sequence” which cannot be described in words.  [CAUTION:  brief nudity herein].

Personal note:  Joel and Ethan Coen grew up in St. Louis Park, Minnesota — a Minneapolis suburb where I lived for a couple of years. This ‘burb is also the boyhood home of Minnesota Senator Al Franken. The photo below was taken in 2007 just after he announced his intention to run for the Senate.
